5 Steps To Build A Team That Sticks With You For Years

5 Steps To Build A Team That Sticks With You For Years

June 12, 20244 min read

As the CEO of your company, have you ever felt feelings of regret towards a certain employee? You keep thinking that maybe, you made a quick decision and should have done your due diligence upon hiring them.

They’re in.

They’re trying to make things work.

But something isn’t clicking – there's a palpable disconnect.

And now, firing them feels heavier than the process of hiring them.

Here’s some food for thought: That employee might have the same feelings towards you and your company. BUMMER!

They might have been looking for an exit too. And the reality could be that it's not them; it's your company's culture that needs a makeover.

“Wait! What did you just say? How can this be true? I mean, we have an amazing team and I deeply care about my employees.”

Yes! You do. I’m not doubting your intentions for your team.

But if you don’t have a few KEY operational pillars in place, your team can start regretting their role & positions, causing distress, poor output, and quiet remorse.

As a leader, your role is to create more leaders, and those leaders should feel:

  • Confident

  • Fully capable

  • Empowered to help carry your vision forward.

If your team feels like mere puppets with someone pulling their strings, they'll likely begin exploring other options sooner rather than later.

Now the question arises…

What can you do to avoid this chaos? What things or practices can you have in place to make your team feel empowered and creatively fueled?

Well! Whether you're at the six-figure mark or scaling to seven and beyond, here's a list of steps you can take to retain your top talent:

1. Create Coherence with SOPs

Efficiency is the backbone of every successful business. That's where Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) come into play. These clear guidelines provide your team with a roadmap for executing tasks, minimizing errors, and maximizing productivity. By investing time in developing and implementing SOPs, you empower your employees to work smarter, not harder, ultimately driving success and growth.

2. Have a Clear Company Culture

Company culture isn't just a buzzword – it's the soul of your business. Whether it's through team-building activities, recognition programs, or leadership initiatives, nurturing a strong company culture creates a sense of belonging and purpose. By aligning actions with values, you create a workplace where top talent thrives and stays committed for the long haul.

3. Offer Bonuses and Incentives

Money talks, but bonuses and incentives speak volumes. Recognizing and rewarding exceptional performance is crucial to keeping your team motivated and engaged. Whether it's through profit-sharing initiatives, performance-based bonuses, or employee recognition programs, offering tangible rewards for hard work sends a powerful message: your contributions matter, and they won't go unnoticed. By incentivizing excellence, you not only boost morale but also cultivate a culture of high performance and achievement.

4. Invest in Their Growth

Great employees don't just want a job; they want a career. That's why investing in professional development is key to retaining top talent. Whether it's through training programs, mentorship opportunities, or skill development courses, supporting your team's growth shows that you're invested in their success.

5. Prioritizing Well-being

Employees who feel overworked and underappreciated are more likely to burn out and seek opportunities elsewhere. That's why it's crucial to prioritize their well-being. Offering flexible work arrangements, generous vacation policies, and wellness programs not only boost morale but also improve productivity and retention. By fostering a healthy work-life balance, you create a supportive environment where employees can thrive both personally and professionally.

Does your company have these key pillars in place? If not, which one of these steps are you most excited to implement in your business? Reply and let me know. I’d love to hear!

Because the truth of the matter is, taking the necessary steps to retain your TOP talent isn’t an option, it’s a necessity in today’s fast-paced, full-of-opportunities world.

See you next Thursday.
